Steel Ball Run resets the timeline. After Stone Ocean's ending, Araki restarts in an alternate continuity: 1890, America, and a transcontinental horse race from San Diego to New York City. The protagonists are Johnny Joestar, a paralysed former jockey, and Gyro Zeppeli, an executioner from a small European duchy who carries two impossibly perfect steel balls and a technique called the Spin. The race itself is real, but the U.S. President Funny Valentine is using it as cover to recover the scattered pieces of an ancient relic, and most of the riders are Stand users hunting the same prize. Part 7 is widely considered the saga's peak: its fights are slower and weirder, its themes (justice, sacrifice, what 'home' is worth) are heavier, and Johnny's character arc is the most carefully built in the series.
